Your BFF (best friend forever) for blood sugar control is PFF: Protein, fat and fiber.

Protein originates from the greek word “proteios” which means of first importance. In the context of blood sugar balance, protein is foundational. Protein flatlines blood sugar. This is why it is the first food in my PFF principle.  Focus on putting protein on your plate first.

The quality and quantity of protein matters. Animal based proteins are the best sources as they contain the complete array of essential amino acids. Do your best to consume free-range and pasture raised protein sources as well as wild fish. Purchasing high quality protein sources will minimize antibiotic residues, toxins, and maximize the quality of fats.

The quantity of protein is important too. For those of you that weigh your food this equates to 1.70g x your body weight in kilograms or .75g x your bodyweight in pounds. If you don’t want to bother with weighing your protein, the chart below will help you determine your protein intake based on your bodyweight. The “decks” represent a deck of playing cards. The size of one deck of cards is about 20-25 grams of protein. This is a good starting point for most people.

BODYWEIGHT
AMOUNT OF PROTEIN PER DAY

100 lbs. (45.5 kgs) - 3 decks
125 lbs. (56.8 kgs) - 4 decks
150 lbs. (68.2 kgs) - 5 decks
175 lbs. (79.6 kgs) - 6 decks
200 lbs. (90.9 kgs) - 7 decks
225 lbs. (102.3 kgs) - 8 decks

Make sure to spread your protein around throughout the day. For example, if you weigh 175 pounds, consume 2 decks of cards of protein at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Spreading out your protein intake will help keep blood sugar stable throughout the day.
